ABOUT ME
Who Am I
I'm Jean Paul Grech — a UI/UX designer with a background in motion design. I have worked to create/implement interfaces and experiences in both games and iGaming, whether as part of a game jam or for an exciting new product feature (like loyalty-scheme gamification). Fortunately I have worked with other designers, artists, developers, product owners/managers, both in large and small teams which I have found to positiv contributed to the quality of work I create.
What Inspired My UI/UX Journey
I got into this space because at heart I enjoy problem solving. It just happened to be the case that I fell in love with design and my appreciation for interactive media. Working in UI/UX has given me the outlet to solve design puzzles on a daily basis, while also creating something that I know will be used by someone either to make their life better or to provide them a positive experience.
I am inspired by the works of designers like Julien Mario (Dishonored 1/2, Prey & Wolfenstein Cyberpilot), Ben Pero (Ghost Recon: Phantoms, Farcry 2 & Deus Ex Mankind Divided) and Josh Barnett (Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, Hades) for their ability to create UI that is homogenous to the world that they are crafting. Outside of games, I am an advocate of the teachings done by the Nielsen Norman Group (NN/G), IBM’s Design Language and Google’s Material 3.0 for their focus on providing thorough research on how to approach design problems from a user’s POV.
What Drives Me
To keep players/users at the forefront of every design decision while delivering high-quality UI that’s both clean and true to the project’s style. In addition to this, I am a team player at heart and will push myself to great lengths to help my team reach our fullest potential, be it through working diligently and providing clean workflows or through effective documentation/tickets.
My Current Ambitions
To take part in more game jams, work with new interdisciplinary teams, experiment deeper with RIVE, and tackle more challenging, rewarding projects where I can push my creativity and problem-solving skills even further. I am also currently expanding my knowledge of gamificaiton by studying The Octalysis Framework for Gamification & Behavioral Design by Yu-kai Chou!
